The clastic section south-west of Aswan is classified into several Paleozoic and Cretaceous units. The geographic location of the area and the stratigraphic setting of its units together with their tectonic framework have great impact on its sedimentary geologic history. Generally, the sedimentary section was mostly deposited under fluvial conditions with minor marine incursions, getting more dominant with time. Deposition took place in intracratonic basins which were delineated by movements of the two main blocks in North Africa. The many directions of paleocurrents during the early Cretaceous give evidences for rivers flowing to the south west through the TransAfrican passage which followed a fracture zone between the two main African blocks.
