Feldspar is important for the ceramic industries because of its content of alumina and alkali (potash and soda) and its relatively low firing temperature. It is the main constituent of the alkali granites and related placer feldspar.
The most promising areas of placer feldspar occurs at El-Missikat and Abu-Shaibah in the NorthEastern Desert of Egypt. Mineral, grain size analysis and geochemical studies as well as physical testing were undertaken on the placer feldspar of both localities. The results lead to a conclusion that Abu-Shaibah and wadi El-Missikat are the most favorable areas. They are characterized by the following:
1- Low quartz to feldspar ratio, the percentage of quartz to feldspar ratio is 1:1.9 for Gabal El-Missikat and 1:2 for Abu-Shaibah. 2- Low iron oxide content in the raw alluvial sample, it is 0.87% and 1.17% for Gabal El-Missikat and Abu-Shaibah respectively. 3- High alkalis content, the percentage of
K2O + Na2O is 8% and 9% for both localities. 4- Good amiability of the two deposits for upgrading where two concentrates was received by sieving suitable for ceramics industry. 5- Both localities cover extensive areas, consequently large reserves of a mixture of feldspar and quartz are available. 6- Both placer feldspar are related to uraniferous granites, so the received placer feldspar sediments show high U-content (at wadi El-Missikat - ~ 0.3% and at wadi Abu-Shaibah - ~ 0.1%). This fact will influence from an environmental point of view on using these feldspars in industry. Leaching of the U-content is necessary.
