NEW FINDINGS IN THE EOCENE STRATIGRAPHY OF GEBEL ATAQA - NORTHERN GALALA, NORTH EASTERN DESERT, EGYPT.

The study of three sections in the northwest side of the Gulf of Suez, at Ataqa. North Galala and Kehilia reveals a Lower Eocene Ypresian unit in the former two localities. A Lutetian section was deposited on top of the North Galala, before a major fault brought down both the Ataqa and Kehilia areas against the high North Galala. The Bartonian sea transgressed over the faulted down block i.e. Ataqa-Kehilia, depositing 350m carbonates including Somalina stefanini but North Galala was high; a faulted up block, hence never received Bartonian sediments. The faulting movement echoed the end Lutetian Pyrenean Atlasic stresses related to the collision between Africa and Europe plates.
