SEDIMENTARY NATURE AND MINERAL COMPOSITION CHARACHTERISTICS OF BEACH SEDIMENTS AS CRITERIA FOR EROSION AND ACCRETION PROCESSES, WEST PORT SAID, EGYPT.

Biology and Geology Department Faculty of Education, Suez Canal University Port Said.

The engineering structures, including seawalls and detached breakwaters were used to diminish or halt the erosion of sand from the beach. Six detached breakwaters were constructed at the breaker zone, nearly parallel to the present shoreline west of Port Said at El-Abtal, El-Firdows and and El- Gamil tourist villages.
The present study deals with the effect of the constructed structures on the sediment drift and heavy mineral distribution on the beach west Port Said for a distance of about 20 km.

The study reveals that the beach sediments in concern are formed mainly under accretional process after building of the detached breakwater, while El-Diba sector west of EI-Gamil inlet is reflecting an interplay between erosional and accretional processes. though erosion dominates.
